The 30-Day Declutter Challenge
One small declutter task a day for 30 days, a gentle way to lighten your home before a move or listing.
If your closets are full, your junk drawer has its own junk drawer, and the thought of tackling it all at once makes you want to close the door and walk away, this challenge is for you. It breaks decluttering into 30 small tasks, one a day, so you make steady progress without giving up a whole weekend.
It's a great fit before a move or before you list your home, when every cabinet that isn't overflowing helps. But it works just as well if you're staying put and want your home to feel lighter.
How the challenge works
Each day has one focused task. Most are small enough to finish in an evening, and none of them ask you to empty the whole house at once. Some days are about clearing out, some are about organizing what's left, and several are about getting things out the door to donate.
A simple way to handle each day is to sort as you go into three piles: keep, donate and toss. Keep what you use and love, bag up the donations right away and put them in your car, and throw out anything that's expired, broken or past saving. The faster things leave the house, the less likely they are to creep back into a drawer.
Where the 30 days take you
The list moves around the house so no single room wears you out. Here's a preview of the kinds of spaces it covers:
- Closets and clothing, including shoes, accessories and kids' clothes
- The kitchen, from cabinets and the pantry to the fridge, freezer and spice rack
- Bathroom cabinets, the medicine cabinet, and makeup and skincare
- Paperwork, old mail and your office space
- Linen closets, cleaning supplies, the laundry room and storage bins
- Your cars, your purse or wallet, and the junk drawers (yes, more than one)
- Furniture, decorations, toys, books and media you're ready to pass along
It even includes a few digital days, like deleting apps and photos you don't need, clearing old files off your computer and unsubscribing from emails you never open.
Why it helps before a move or a listing
When you're getting ready to sell, less stuff makes rooms look bigger in photos and makes it easier for buyers to picture themselves living there. And when you're moving, everything you donate now is something you don't have to pack, move or unpack later. I tell my clients that decluttering early is one of the easiest ways to take stress off moving week.
If you miss a day, just pick up where you left off. The point is momentum, not perfection.

Common questions about decluttering
How long does the declutter challenge take?
Thirty days, with one task per day. Most tasks focus on a single spot, like a closet, a cabinet or your car, so they fit into a normal day.
Does the challenge cover more than physical stuff?
Yes. A few days are digital: deleting unused apps and photos from your phone, removing old documents and photos from your computer, and unsubscribing from emails you don't want.
